Introduction to Professional/Personal Management Competences

Professional/Personal Management Competences is Practice Focused. It is designed to ensure that the intern understands the legal, ethical, and regulatory frameworks that govern the pharmacy profession in Nigeria. Beyond the laws, it emphasizes the development of the pharmacist as a responsible professional who is committed to ethical conduct, continuous self-improvement (life-long learning), and effective communication. It defines the “rules of engagement” for practicing pharmacy.

Syllabus Outline

The syllabus requires knowledge and application of the following key areas :

• Regulatory & Professional Bodies:

  • Structure and functions of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) (PSN Constitution).

  • Structure and functions of the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) (PCN Act).

  • Structure and functions of NAFDAC (NAFDAC Act).

• Legal Framework:

  • Pharmacy Laws.

  • Drug Laws.

• Ethics & Standards:

  • Code of Ethics, Professional Standards & Guidance.

  • Concepts of good decision-making, liability, accountability, and professional responsibility.

  • Standards of Professional Performance; Principles & Obligations.

  • Standards of Good Professional Practice.

• Clinical Governance & Regulation:

  • Purpose & Principles of Clinical Governance.

  • Application of Clinical Governance in Pharmacy practice.

  • Practice Regulation: Procedure for Regulation, Licensing of Premises, Disciplinary Procedures & Sanctions.

  • Roles/Responsibilities of Superintendent Pharmacists & Pharmacy Technicians.

• Personal Development:

  • Concept of Life-long learning.

  • Learning Cycle.

  • Concept of Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

  • Competence-Based Pharmacy Education.

  • Presentation Skills.
